by Glenn Woodell
This was a musician’s show as there were plenty of local artists in the crowd. It started off with the instrumental, progressive/djent band out of Toronto, Intervals, with their hard hitting riffs and complex time signatures.
By the time Mammoth took the stage, the floor was packed and full of anticipation. There is no denying that it’s difficult to mention Wolfgang Van Halen without bringing up his father, the late, amazing Eddie Van Halen, but Wolfgang truly stands on his own. Aside from the last name and some of his fancy tapping on the guitar neck, you wouldn’t really notice any resemblance of his vocals or music to those of his father. Any giveaway to a relationship may be the noticeable abundance of EVH guitars, amps, and pedals across the stage.
Wolfgang did speak of his father when he introduced the acoustic version of Distance, his tribute to him. Eddie proclaimed that it was his favorite of the songs that Wolfgang had written so far as he did a solo performance under a spotlight.
Mammoth WVH is a band to watch as Wolfgang exploits his many musical talents. Although he tours with a full band, his recordings are all done completely by him on every instrument, a true testament to his abilities and to his dedication.
