Bucky Covington Returns to American Idol for Season 5 Reunion Episode A 20-Year Full-Circle Moment Comes to Life on May 4

Nashville, TN (May 1, 2026) – In a full-circle moment nearly two decades in the making, country artist Bucky Covington will return to the stage that first introduced him to millions, appearing on American Idol as part of a special Season 5 reunion episode airing May 4.

The “20th High School Reunion”-themed broadcast will bring together fan-favorite finalists from one of the show’s most memorable seasons. The episode was first teased on the show’s official companion podcast, hosted by Danielle Fishel, who revealed that members of the Season 5 Top 10 will return to duet with this season’s Top 5 contestants.

Covington will be joined by fellow alumni Taylor Hicks, Paris Bennett, Kellie Pickler, and Elliott Yamin. Original judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson will also return to mentor contestants, adding to the night’s nostalgic energy.

As part of the live broadcast, returning artists will perform duets with the Top 5, alongside appearances from professional dancers of Dancing with the Stars, as America votes to determine the Top 3 finalists.

Covington, who placed eighth during Season 5, launched a successful career following his time on Idol. He signed with Lyric Street Records and released his self-titled debut album in 2007, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. The project produced charting singles including “A Different World,” “It’s Good to Be Us,” and “I’ll Walk,” along with fan favorite “A Father’s Love (The Only Way He Knew How).”

In addition to music, Covington appeared in Hannah Montana: The Movie and has made numerous television appearances. He is currently preparing to return to the studio to record new music and is planning an acoustic tour for later in 2026.

The moment also underscores the lasting impact of American Idol beyond the stage. Covington’s longtime publicist, Colleen Lippert, first discovered him as a fan during Season 5.

After the sudden passing of her father when she was just 11 years old, Lippert found herself struggling to find joy. That changed the night she watched Covington’s audition in 2006.

“I remember seeing Bucky audition and, for the first time in a long time, feeling excited about something,” Lippert said. “I looked forward to watching him every week. I told my mom, ‘I’m going to meet him one day.’”

Years later, after attending dozens of shows, that early connection evolved into a professional relationship. Today, Lippert is the founder of Anchor Publicity and represents Covington—marking a full-circle journey that mirrors the spirit of the upcoming reunion.

American Idol is so much more than a singing competition,” Covington said. “It produces careers.”
