Wintour 2016 made its way to the Wright State University Nutter Center where a sold out crowd was eagerly awaiting performances from PVRIS, AWOLNATION and the headliner for the evening, Fall Out Boy. PVRIS began the night with a short setlist that left the crowd thirsty for more. PVRIS’ lead vocalist/guitarist Lynn Gunn led the group with her haunting vocals and confident stage presence. Alex Babinski, plays keyboard and guitar while Brian MacDonald thumps the bass. Lynn worked the entirety of the stage and strolled down the stairs to the V-stage catwalk, getting up close with fans.
PVRIS performed a solid opening that certainly got the crowd warmed up for the next act.
AWOLNATION then took the stage in a cloud of smoke. As the smoke became thicker, the stage flashed “AWOLNATION” in projected lighting. The band is made up of Aaron Bruno, Kenny Carkeet, Zach Irons, Isaac Carpenter and Marc Walloch. The energy from front man Aaron Bruno is indescribably charismatic. Bruno’s dance moves were just as incredible as his dominant vocal power. AWOLNATION performed new songs “Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)”, “I Am” and “Woman, Woman” from their latest album, Run. The band closed their set with the crowd favorite “SAIL”. They worked the audience into a frenzy, chanting “This is the AWOLNATION”. Bruno walked up one side of the V-stage and down the other waving to the Dayton, Ohio crowd as he thanked them for coming out to the show.
After a quick set change, the stage was equipped with a curtain as to keep the audience in suspense of the Headliner for the evening! The audience eagerly awaited the appearance of Fall Out Boy behind a backdrop of darkened lights and a closed curtain. Although rainy conditions and warming temperatures enveloped in Dayton, snow was falling from the ceiling in the Nutter Center in the form of bubbles. As the bubbles fell the crowd was having fun watching and popping them. Once Fall Out Boy took the stage, Patrick, Andrew, Joseph and Pete proved to be exceptional showmen. They work a stage and a crowd while executing their stylistic sound. The highly animated, mostly twenty-something crowd didn’t hesitate to dance and clap along to every song.
The setlist consisted of 22 Fall Out Boy originals including many crowd favorites such as “Sugar, We’re Goin Down”, and “Dance, Dance”. The band also included the new album singles “Irresistable”, “Uma Thurman”, and “Centuries”. Wintour 2016 tour featuring Fall Out Boy, AWOLNATION and PVRIS is definitely worth seeing. The light show itself is worth the price of admission as it captivates your attention with a variety of designs, colors and patterns. The use of pyrotechnics, Confetti and the snow (Bubbles) falling from the ceiling create an added element of surprise that engages even the most unconvinced concertgoer. It was a night that will not be forgotten by many as evidenced by the endless smiles of those in attendance.
