Last week I had the privilege of sitting down with up and coming country music artist Josh Goodlett to talk about his newly released single, his influences, and how this journey all came about. Josh, a native of Taylorsville, KY, knows all about working hard to get to where he wants to be. He was brought up working on the family farm before and after school then worked a full time job while pursuing his career in country music. With support for his latest single “I Don’t Usually Do This”, this rising country artist will continue to sky rocket.
Q: Let’s start at the beginning. Why did you decide to get into country music?
A: Well, when I got divorced, I picked up my guitar and taught myself how to play. I started writing and wrote a couple songs. People around me started saying they were good.
Q: How long have you been in the country music scene?
A: I’ve been in country music now for about 7 years.
Q: Do you mind sharing some of your musical influences?
A: Bob Marley, Kenny Chesney, and Waylon Jennings. Other influences include Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, AC/DC, and Aerosmith. There’s not only one genre I particularly admire. I’m country because I’m country. However, I appreciate music of all types.
Q: Tell me about some of the artists for whom you have opened?
A: I’ve opened for Kip Moore, Tyler Farr, Shooter Jennings, and Big Smo. He [Big Smo] was one of the coolest guys I’ve ever met. I’ve also opened for Clayton Anderson and Michael Ray. Michael’s a good guy. They all are willing to go out of their way to give me tips and any advice. They are laid back guys.
Q: Let’s talk about your new single that was recently released titled, “I Don’t Usually Do This”.
A: This song was written by Bobby E. Boyd, Brad Wolf and Philip Moore. The moment I first heard it, I knew I had to have it as my single. It’s a song that I relate to strongly. I’ve been through a divorce, ran around with reckless abandon, and thought I’d never get married again. Now, here I am getting married in 7 months. This song has it all, it’s a song that I love and I hope the fans listen to it and love it.
Q: If I’m correct, right now you’re #13 on the download list?
A: Yes. Right now I’m 13th. I’m ranked among artists like Blake Shelton, Jana Kramer, and Luke Bryan. I’m one of the only independent artists on the list. Being on that list with big artists like that is a grand feeling.
Q: What has the response been like to the new single?
A: People love it. I’ve got a huge backing with this new single and I really see it helping me go further.
Josh further talks about the fans saying, “It’s all about the fans; I will stay hours after a show to meet as many people as I can. I try to spend time talking to each of them, learning their stories, and getting to know them as much as I can. I also want fans to know me for me, not just the songs I sing.”
Josh Goodlett is a genuine, humble guy when it comes to himself. He is a father of five and just a few short months away from marrying his fiancé. Josh said before we left, “It’s God’s gift he gave me and it’s a blessing to be here doing this.” Josh Goodlett is definitely making a name for himself and is an artist to keep your eye on in 2016. Josh is currently on tour and says, “Wherever they’ll let me play, I’ll play”. His current dates are 4/01/2016 in Taylorsville, KY and 4/02/2016 in Louisville, KY. More dates are being posted often.
