JD & The Straight Shot are back with their latest project Good Luck and Good Night. The album captures true folk essence within each track. “The Ballad of Jacob Marley”, with its enchanting vocals and haunting banjo rhythm is a true homage to the deepest sewn roots of Americana. JD and his band of talented instrumentalists combine for the track “Moonlight”. “I Know You Know I Know”, is a delicate balance of confessional vocals, deep, upright base and the continual stir of the snare drum. JD & The Straight Shot have dedicated themselves to prolific storytelling-style songwriting and simple, yet lovely harmonies. “Shambala” features continuous scraper (or Güiro) that serves to drive the tempo. Good Luck and Good Night’s title track features a children’s choir which adds to the track’s thoughtful lyricism. JD & The Straight Shot uses aching, lengthy phrasing on the violin which adds to the somber, earnest nature of the album. The closing track, “Never Alone” plays on charming harmonies and pizzicato strings.
Good Luck and Good Night is a sterling example of Americana music. The band uses their musicality to their advantage throughout the album. There is never a time while listening that one instrument or voice out-showcases another. Having also seen JD & The Straight Shot live, I can personally attest that they are just as cohesive in person as they are in their latest studio album! Good Night and Good Luck will be ready for listening ears on September, 15! Be sure to catch JD & The Straight Shot on tour!
