The four time Grammy nominated R&B singer packed the Tangier Cabernet Lounge in Akron (OH) Saturday night. Playing the first of the two sold out sets of the evening at 7:30. Benet set the tone of the night which was casual and sensual. Playing “Chocolate Legs” early in the set, let fans know the night was one for lovers.
The 51 year old singer played a medley of songs from his first album and many more hits.
Benet’s whose career has spanned over 20 plus years has had many hits on the charts. But his duet with Canadian R&B singer Tamia, “Spend My Life With You” will always standout as a favorite. Benet before singing the smash single told the background story of how the duet came to be and how he was confident even while in studio he had a number one hit but felt the song could use female vocals. His first thought was to use Tamia maybe mostly for her talent but definitely for her looks. Benet was open about his crush on the singer and was confident that his looks would possibly get him a chance with her. But those hopes were dashed when Tamia’s husband former NBA player Grant Hill accompanied her to the recording session. Since Tamia wasn’t there Saturday, Benet sung both parts and executed it flawlessly with the crowds assistant.
The night had quite a few funny moments one being when Eric joked that he himself was surprised at how good he looked and felt being in his fifty’s and the females in attendance enthusiastically agreed by their thunderous applause. Many of those same fans professed their love for the singer through out the intimate set by shouting I love you’s and reaching out for Eric to grab their hands in which he obliged.
The NEO Soul Singer also played songs from 7th Studio album titled Eric Benet (2016) including “Sunshine”. He also took time to remember the many artist that the industry has loss in the past few years including the late singer Prince. Benet sang a cover of “How Come You Don’t Call Me” written by Prince in 1982 but was only made popular when it was released with his “1999” album with other artists covering their own renditions of the song.
The night concluded with more the singers number one hits such “You’re The Only One” and “Georgy Porgy” (w/Faith Evans). If Eric Benet rolls into your city for The M.E. Tour w/Marsha Ambrosius, go! You don’t want to miss an opportunity to see this timeless artist perform. Tickets go on sale Monday January 22nd.
