R&B Singer Monica along with Dru Hill, and special guest Jagged Edge helped famed radio stations 93.1 WKZAK FM and Z107.9 FM kickoff the perfect summertime party with their annual Stone Soul Festival.
Fans of all ages were in attendance, they filled the Nautica Pavilion to almost capacity and a lot of fans were still coming in well after the show had started, myself included. As we craned our necks to see the action, we could tell that Dru Hill had already taken the stage. The group with their polished choreographed routines and matching red jackets, transported you back in time. As they sung the groups most popular songs, you could see the same energy that they had in the 90’s that carried them through to present day. Their set included some of the groups biggest hits including “Incomplete” and “Sleeping In My Bed”. The night wouldn’t have been complete if they hadn’t sung Sisqó’s famed single the “Thong Song” that they used to close out their set.
The party would continue with both DJ Hazmatt and DJ PENNY LANE playing music in between sets that had fans up and dancing in the aisles.
Next to take the stage was Jagged Edge, still with their famed smooth R&B style. These guys did not disappoint the fans at all. From start to finish they held the audience captive as they rolled through their compilation of hits including “Gotta Be” and “Where The Party At”. Jagged Edge informed fans they will soon be releasing their 10th studio album.
Finally Monica the Grammy Award winning singer and TV personality took the stage adding to the excitement of the evening. She started with her back in the day mega hit “Don’t Take It Personal” (Just One Of Them Days). Her look and sound were both flawless as she belted out the hit song. The fans were loving it as they sang along word for word. The R&B legend would continue with other throwback songs from the past albums many that became number ones on both the pop and R&B charts.
Monica also mixed in a medley of songs that included a rendition of Mary J Blige’s “I’m Going Down” (originally done by Chaka Khan), “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here” by Tamia and “Come and Talk To Me” by Jodeci.
She also referenced the her friend and influencer, the late Whitney Houston whom she shared a few special moments that the two had. Then she sang a couple songs she said Whitney liked when she sang “You Give Good Love”.
As Monica was singing, you felt her love and admiration she has for Whitney. While she was doing so, she did it in honor of her, and it was really a touching moment.
Before closing with her current single “Commitment” off her 9th studio album Chapter 38. The singer took time to thank fans for all their years of loyal support, and also to reassure her them that no matter what they may hear about her personal life, she is doing just fine. She was no doubt referring to the fact she had filed for divorce earlier this year from ex-NBA player husband. By the looks of it she really is doing great! Raising her beautiful family, and she started her own record label recently (Mondeenise Music).
