Teddy Thompson Releases “Nick Lowe Meets Roy Orbison”-Influenced Single, “The Game”

Forthcoming Album, Never Be The Same, Out May 15 via RPF Records/Royal Potato Family

First Collection of New Songs In Six Years

UK, Ireland, and North American Summer Tour Dates

April 29, 2026 – Today, Teddy Thompson shares “The Game,” the third single to be released ahead of his forthcoming album, Never Be The Same, due May 15 via RPF Records/Royal Potato Family. A droll, tongue-in-cheek take on the often messy process of falling in and out of love, Thompson’s bemused cynicism is belied by the track’s English pub rock charm and vintage American pop warmth.

“The song is sort of Nick Lowe meets Roy Orbison, it’s quite stylized and retro,” says Thompson. “Lyrically, I think of it as being quintessentially American with its talk of jukeboxes and wedding bells chiming, almost like an Archie comic. On the other hand, I’ve had people tell me it reminds them of Nick Lowe and songs from that period, which is an association I do like.”

Never Be The Same is Thompson’s first collection of original material since 2020. He refines his craft across ten tracks exploring music’s enduring preoccupations: love, longing, and the uneasy passage of time. Produced by renowned Grammy Award–winning musician/producer David Mansfield, the album at its core highlights Thompson’s longstanding commitment to songwriting as a form, inspired by early influences like Chuck BerryHank Williams, and Crowded House, as well as towering figures of the craft like Bob DylanLeonard CohenThe Beatles, and, certainly, his parents, British folk icons Richard and Linda Thompson.

Ultimately, Never Be The Same, as the title suggests, is an album about steady evolution; a suite of deeply considered, carefully constructed songs rooted in lived authenticity and personal experience. If there is a message, it’s that change is not only inevitable but essential, even when you’d rather stay exactly where you are.

“Songwriting is magical. You can hear one hundred people sing ‘I love you,’ and you know which one is telling the truth,” Thompson says. “If the root of the sentiment is authentic, it will resonate.”

Thompson has announced 13 shows in the UK and Ireland this June to support Never Be The Same. These will be followed by North American dates, including City Winery New York City on June 26, and a West Coast tour with a set at Vancouver Folk Festival in July.
