V TORRES Shares Heartfelt Single “Winter Solstice” A Moving Meditation on Grief, Compassion and Finding Light in Darkness

Sophomore album Woman out September 1

JULY 9, 2026(Los Angeles, California)– “This is a track I wrote when a very close friend of mine had lost her brother to a tragic accident,” Los Angeles-based alt-rock singer/songwriter VTorres explains about “Winter Solstice,” one of the most emotionally resonant songs on her upcoming sophomore album Woman (releasing independently on September 1, 2026). “I was in a position of wanting to console and be there for them, but there really was nothing I could do for them at the time,” she recalls. “These words came out fast and the song was written on the Winter Solstice, hence the name.” Written for someone who had always been a pinnacle of strength, the song is less about finding the perfect words than recognizing the quiet power of being present and emotionally available.

A seasonal marker for both the darkest night of the year as well as the gradual return of the day, the hopeful symbolism behind “Winter Solstice” reflects that emotional journey from despair to the eventual rebound. “I felt like the visual of that dark night was present in this song,” Torres says, “but the sliver of light on the horizon was a sign of hope and something to look forward to as well.”

Torres says the friend who inspired the song had always been a source of comfort for everyone around them and after supporting Torres through some of her own darkest moments, writing “Winter Solstice” became her way of returning to that personal equilibrium. As the song evolved, Torres realized it wasn’t only about comforting someone else, it was also about extending that same grace to herself. “I wanted this song to embody that feeling of being there for someone who’s always there for everyone else,” she explains. “I think in some part of this it was also giving myself that love. Knowing that you can love someone from afar and you can love yourself and hold yourself up even when you’re feeling alone.”

That balance between sorrow and hope carries into the song’s arrangement. Beginning with a driving surf-punk energy before opening into the sweeping, choral, “Winter Solstice” mirrors the emotional shift from isolation toward comfort and connection. Torres says she heard the chorus harmonies in her head while writing and intentionally wanted the song to bloom into something expansive. She also knew it needed a slide guitar to lend the track a subtle Americana warmth. “When I hear the slide guitar, it feels like a hug,” she says. “It feels like comfort and can bring me to tears, which is exactly what this song is really all about to me.”

“Winter Solstice” follows the release of Torres’ powerful lead single, Woman,” the stirring title track that introduced listeners to an album centered around identity, resilience, healing, and transformation. Together, the songs reveal the emotional landscape of Woman, a seven-song collection that traces love, grief, freedom, and self-discovery through expansive indie rock, beach Americana, desert psychedelia, Latin textures, and deeply human storytelling.
